First, "head for the mountains"..those mountain like things on the lower left of the tracksheet, they also look like cartoon mice noses...the pointy things at the bottom left of the timeline, click on it.

Use the pen tool (p is the keyboard modifier) to add points to the bar to change opacity of a video track or the volume of an audio track.
